Excursions at the manor: a 200-year story you can walk through

7 km from Kuldīga hides a manor that time has not managed to change. Come in — and find out why.

Padure Manor was built in 1838, by the hand of Riga merchant and guild elder John Lewis Balfour. Its last owner, Alfons Oskars Balfour, died in 1920 on the road from Kuldīga to Ventspils. Since then the manor has seen an agricultural school, a library, and finally, a return to life as a place where stories aren’t behind glass, but around you.

Today you can walk the same corridors, see the original wall paintings, and hear the history from someone who knows it better than any book. Almost everything here has been preserved as it was — not a museum copy, but a real home that simply continues to live.

Why visit the manor

Most manors in Latvia are either ruins or have been converted into something else. Padure Manor is the exception — 99% of the original details are still in place, and in every room you can see wall paintings that haven’t been repainted in a hundred years. This isn’t a story about what something used to look like. It’s a story you can touch.

Without a guide — €7

Free viewing every day from 9:00 to 18:00. Go at your own pace, stop wherever you like: by the paintings, by the window overlooking the park, or simply wherever you want to linger.

With a guide — from €12 (group min. €50)

Stories that change depending on the audience — the Balfour family, the war, the restoration. A guided tour reveals what you wouldn’t notice at first glance: where the school was, where the library was, what the house looked like the moment Jānis Lazdāns took it over in 2007, and why it looks the way it does today. Advance booking required.
